In Search of Seoul, Safety Update

This is normally a lighthearted site, but there is a solemn air in the city following the tragic events in Itaewon.

Tragedy in Itaewon

By now you will have probably heard of the tragedy that unfolded on the night of the 29th of October while Halloween revellers were out in the Itaewon are of Seoul. At least 153 people were confirmed dead in a massive crush, as of the time of writing. It is the deadliest incident in South Korea in recent history, and our hearts go out to family and friends of those lost. The cause isn’t clear yet, but celebrations following relaxation of covid restrictions saw unprecedented crowds on the streets.

We were out last night on the south side of the river in Gangnam, well away from the chaos unfolding, and are safe and sound. Let’s hope something is learned in the face of this horrible disaster.
